Columbus Bar Association President’s Report | October

Join Robert D. Erney, president of The Columbus Bar Association for his October president’s report.

Hi everyone, and welcome to our October podcast. These are turbulent times, indeed, with the pandemic issues involving racial and social injustice, a mental health crisis across the country, increased gun violence on the streets of Columbus, particularly with juveniles, and a very divisive election.

Nevertheless, in spite of it all, I continue to be moved by the goodness of our members. The Columbus Bar Association, the Columbus Bar Foundation, and the Legal Aid Society of Columbus are proud to announce the 2020 Pro Bono Award winners.

We will be having a virtual award ceremony, October 27th at 5:00 PM. You’re invited to attend and can register on our website. I’d like to announce our winners at this time. And our In the Trenches Award goes to Maxim Perel. Our Corporate Firm Pro Bono Award to Keesha Warmsby.

Our Pro Bono Support Award to Deborah Crawford. Expanding Our Impact Award to Hannah Botkin-Doty. And our Extraordinary Pro Bono Service by an individual Award goes to Kevin Duffy. We’re proud of our heroes, and we thank them for their service.

Our managing partner Diversity Initiative has just published Columbus Speaks: We Are Listening. And this is a top-notch publication involving a variety of articles on diversity and an opportunity for those to write about their own experiences and contribute articles. There’s great artwork in this. This is a top-notch publication.

We’re very proud of it. We urge you to view it on our website. Did you know that the Columbus Bar Association publishes twice a month in Columbus Business First? Would you like to write an article or a feature on a topic involving your area of practice? If so, you will appear in front of our local business community, and it’s great exposure for you and your firm. If you’d like to write an article or a feature, let me or the office know. I also wanted to show you our CBA Legal Resource Guide, which has also just been published and is available on our website.

This brings together resources throughout all 88 counties and includes expert witnesses and mediators and local rules and things like that, that will be helpful to your practice. We hope you find it to be useful.

Our CBA 5K Virtual Run/Walk is scheduled for November 7th. It benefits the foundation and all the good works of our foundation. Our next community conversation is November 12th at noon, and it is entitled Election Dissection: Popular Votes, Electoral College, and the Peaceful Transition of Power.

We hope you’ll tune in, we hope you’ll enjoy it. The Columbus Bar Association is a very special place because it applies to all lawyers and all practice areas. Our goal is to make good lawyers better lawyers. That’s what we do. That’s who we are. That’s why we’re here.

Thank you for listening. I’m Rob Erney, number 130. We’ll see you in November.
