What is a hernia?

A hernia is a medical condition in which an internal organ or other body part protrudes through a tear or a weak spot in the muscle wall or connective tissue. There are various types of hernias. The most common are:

  • Inguinal: Occurs in the inner groin
  • Femoral: Occurs in the upper thigh and outer groin
  • Incisional: Occurs through an incision or scar located in the abdomen
  • Ventral: Occurs in the general abdominal and ventral wall
  • Umbilical: Occurs at the belly button
  • Hiatal: Occurs inside the abdomen along with upper stomach and diaphragm

What Causes Hernias

Hernia’s are typically the result of the exertion of pressure on the abdomen. This pressure can cause the weakest portion or a slit to open in the muscle wall or connective tissue which allows an organ or tissue to push through. It’s most common that muscle weakness develops over time and later in life, however in some cases, the muscle weakness was present at birth. Any activity or circumstance that increases abdominal pressure, such as heavy lifting, coughing, sneezing, being obese, or even diarrhea and constipation, can result in a hernia.

Treatment Options for Hernia’s

Every year in the United States, there are roughly one million surgical repairs are performed on hernias. Close to 80% of those repairs are performed on inguinal hernias.

The surgical procedure can be performed in two ways; laparoscopic or open repair. A laparoscopic surgery is performed by applying several small incisions in the abdomen allowing the surgeon to insert surgical tools to repair the hernia. The second way of making a hernia repair is open surgery which requires the surgeon to make a larger incision near the hernia to repair the weak muscle. Both types of hernia repair surgeries can be completed with or without a surgical mesh.

Surgical Hernia Mesh

A surgical mesh is a medical device designed to introduce added support to weakened or compromised tissue. Currently, the majority of surgical meshes available are made from animal or human tissue, or completely synthetic materials. Synthetic surgical mesh comes in two forms; knitted or non-knitted sheets. These synthetic materials can also be absorbable, non-absorbable or a combination of both.

The non-absorbable synthetic mesh will stay in the body permanently and will always serve as a reinforcement. Absorbable mesh will degrade over a period of time and will lose strength as it was designed to do. As degradation occurs, new tissue is intended to grow in it’s place and provide strength to the repair.

Hernia Mesh Complications

Multiple hernia meshes have been removed from the market. These products are no longer available, however, they are still implanted in many patients. The most common complications include:

  • Pain
  • Infection
  • Recurrence
  • Adhesion
  • Obstruction
  • Organ perforation
