Columbus Bar Association President’s Report | February

Hi, everyone. I think everybody has heard Toby Keith’s song, I love This Bar. Well, I feel the same way about the Columbus Bar. Let me explain.

Most of us went to law school because we were interested in the law, wanted to learn about it, and wanted to use the law to help other people solve their problems.

So we went to law school and we found it to be exhilarating and exciting, but it did test our mettle. After graduation we studied like crazy for the bar exam, and when we learned we passed, that was one of the best days of our lives. We then went on to begin working into the field of law.

Some of us went into private practice, some went into government, some went into corporate work, some went to the prosecutor’s office, some to the public defender’s office, etcetera.

We all found out that the practice of law was very different from the study of law. Well, after the initial shock wore off and we had some time to think, we all realized that there were four things that were really, really important to us.

First, be the best lawyer we can be. Second, serve our clients to the best of our abilities. Third, give back to society and help others who are less fortunate than we are. And four, have a healthy, balanced life.

Well, a Columbus Bar Association has programming and resources, that support all four of those core values and critical elements that we need to practice law successfully, and to find peace and joy in the work that we do.

As your law practice changes, the CBA changes with you. As you succeed, the CBA succeeds with you. And as you grow, the CBA grows with you.

The CBA will never stop doing all that it can to make all of us the best lawyers that we can be. I love this bar. I’m Rob Erney, number 130. We’ll see you in March.
